Happy Constitution Day!

Happy Constitution Day! I found this little guy in the shower at the gym yesterday. Guess somebody thought I needed a little Jesus in my life.

It seems the world has gone crazy lately. An assassin thought it justifiable to murder someone who said words he didn’t like. Awful.

I thought we would all agree the murder was wrong, and condemn the killing, but some people seemed to agree with the assassin. They said words I didn’t like. Also awful. But this is America. Say awful things if you want.

Then the AG said the Department of Justice will target people for “hate speech.” Yikes!

(Thankfully, a lot of attorneys—on both sides—said: “Ahem….” Here’s a post from Eugene Volokh with an excerpt from Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression: https://lnkd.in/gbJevSYi.)

And New Jersey wants to make it nigh on impossible for law-abiding people to carry a firearm as they go about their everyday life, for instance walking through a park. Last week, the Third Circuit said: “That checks out.” (https://lnkd.in/gM8Phas4)

And the week before, the Seventh Circuit said Illinois could ban law abiding people from carrying firearms on public transit. (https://lnkd.in/gKU7KKsg)

Which is too bad because we’ve recently seen innocent, unarmed people brutally murdered in a park (https://lnkd.in/gA9m2tjH) and on public transit ( https://lnkd.in/gV85WazB). Awful.

(I’ll have more to say about these lengthy opinions and “sensitive places” in a future post.)

All this makes a person want to stay home. And that is also awful. This is America. We should be out in it.

So as I reflected on the anonymous stranger who scatters plastic figurines around gym lockers, I thought: “Maybe we could all use a little more Constitution in our life.”

And today seemed like the day to say it. Long live freedom.

(BTW, for the first time in American history, the whole thing is on display in the national archives. (https://lnkd.in/g5XPQVWm) If you’re in DC, check it out.)
