Here’s an interesting side note to this would-be assassin’s plan to kill a Supreme Court Justice: He carefully followed the law on traveling by air with the firearm he intended to use.
As I’ve previously written (https://lnkd.in/gQ67giFe), it isn’t difficult to fly with a gun, but the law does regulate it.
Technically, 18 U.S.C. § 922(e), applies to all “common carriers,” not just airlines, so failing to declare a firearm that you drop in a FedEx box is the same as failing to notify the airline that you have a gun in your suitcase.
In this case, the suspect researched the law (investigators found evidence of that on his phone) and then complied with the law by declaring it to the airline and checking it inside his luggage in a hard-sided case.
It was the “not murdering” part of the law he was less concerned with.
